First For Informal Education

Rank Charities

I first heard about the GAP Scheme through friends of the family, and jumped at the opportunity to take a gap year at the Centre. I had completed my A-levels and was unsure to which direction I would best like to take. I have always had a great interest in working with children and young people and hoped that the Gap Scheme would provide me with a greater insight as to my next move.

I was placed in the Y.E.S Project in September 2009. This project provides tenancy and housing support to young people in Knowsley, and it has been an extremely useful learning curve for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time within the Y.E.S Project and for me; it has been really rewarding to have the chance to make a difference to the lives of those I have worked with. This experience has opened my eyes to a much wider extent, and I now definitely appreciate those little things we so often take for granted – youth work is incredibly diverse.

I am also currently studying towards my Level 3 Diploma Course in Informal & Community Education – equivalent to a further 1.5 A-levels.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the colleagues I have had the pleasure to work alongside, the young people I have met along the way, and also to The Rank Foundation for providing me with such an invaluable experience.
