First For Informal Education

Volunteer Project

The Volunteer Project is now in its third year at Centre 63. The project supports young people aged 16-25 who are not in education, employment or training.

The aim of the project is to work with young people who are (N.E.E.T) not in Employment, Education or Training aged between 16-25.The aim of the project is to work with young people who are (N.E.E.T) not in Employment, Education or Training aged between 16-25.

The project supports young people who are in a career vacuum and are lacking the confidence, self esteem and self belief they need to move forward and progress.

The main aims:

  • To work with up to 50 volunteers each year.
  • To promote structure, discipline and measured attainment.
  • To help young people access further education, Training and Employment.
  • To develop local young people.
  • To develop individuals.
  • To develop the local community.
  • To offer accredited training.

The Volunteer Project has seen 5 volunteers go onto further education, 20 volunteers progress onto training with the possibility of securing full time employment once training is complete. Following on from this in 2010 a further 9 volunteers have secured employment through Future Jobs Fund. In addition 3 of our GAP volunteers have gone on to achieve a recognised youth work qualification Level III in Informal and Community Education by distance learning via Y.M.C.A George Williams College.

We currently have several volunteers who are on placements within the Centre. Two of these volunteers work alongside our youth club team planning and organising and evaluating activities. These volunteers based in the Youth Club are also working towards a Platinum ASDAN Award.

19 young people from K.C.C College have accessed the Volunteer Project have progressed on to our Personal Development Course completing ASDAN Bronze Awards.

Centre 63 has a very good relationship with the Rank Charities and they continue to offer us 3 GAP placements a year which is a Youth Work Apprenticeship Scheme. Centre 63 really values this partnership and young people from the Community benefit greatly from this experience.

Just recently the project has secured a contract through Vola’s Moving On Program commissioned to work with 36 young people over an 18 month period. So far we have managed to work with 27 to date. All 27 have completed First Aid, Health & Safety, and True Colours (Personal Development Course) all these are accredited. The program supports the development of young people by offering accredited training, internships with the possibility of employment or apprenticeships, 9 of these 27 young people have progressed on to Future Jobs placements.

The project has also firmly embedded the Skills for Life Project which takes place every week on a Friday. This is an offshoot from both The Volunteer and Y.E.S. Projects. The skills for Life Project supports young people to gain qualifications in both numeracy & literacy up to Level II. So far 16 young people are accessing N.C.F.E literacy and numeracy provision, 16 young people have achieved Level I in literacy and 2 have achieved Level II in literacy and 2 have achieved Level I in numeracy with 6 working towards Level II in both.

The project will develop further over the next year continuing to work in partnership with the local College, Connexions, Jobcentre Plus, MerseyTravel, Vola, Sysco and other partner agencies.
